Estimates
Local moving companies can typically provide you with two types of estimates: binding and non-binding. Most local movers offer their customers this service, though it is not required.
Binding Estimates of Total Cost with Local Moving
Many local movers often provide you with the option of a binding estimate. With this type of estimate, you are not required to pay any more than the amount that you have agreed upon in writing. This type of estimate must clearly list all services that the company will provide. If you need extra services you didn't foresee at the beginning, a local mover can request the payment for those additi! onal services at the time of their being fulfilled.
With a binding estimate, many companies often require that payment be made at the time of delivery, but you can always discuss a different arrangement with your local moving company. Any binding estimate must be in writing, and your mover is required to provide you with a copy.
Non-Binding Estimates of Approximate Cost
Non-binding estimates are often provided by local movers to give you a general idea of what it will cost to use their company. You are not bound to the provided estimate in this case, but neither are you guaranteed that the final price won't be higher. Local movers cannot collect more than what is published in their tariffs. Regardless of the original estimate you receive, you only need to pay the amount in the tariffs for the services you receive.
Like a binding estimate, a non-binding estimate must still be in writing and must still list the different services that will be provided. The estimate provided must appear on the bill of lading and on the order for service. With a non-binding estimate, a local mover cannot charge you more than the amount originally estimated, plus 10 percent, at the time of delivery. Extra fees or charges typically must be paid within 30 days of the services being delivered.
