• If you're just moving to another local spot, talk with friends and colleagues to see if they have had good experiences with certain moving companies. You also want to make sure to check out each moving company with the Better Business Bureau.
• Shop around and get a couple different moving estimates. Interstate moves charge according to the weight of the items moved, the distance traveled, packing and other services.
• To avoid any last minute rises in cost, make sure to inform the mover of all items that will be moved before getting your quote. The moving estimate you receive will vary according to how much you need done.
• Make sure you keep the bill of lading the mover gives you. This bill is the legal contract between you and the moving company.
• Make sure the final moving quote that appears on your contract includes all rates, charges, and the mover's liability for your property. In addition, check your contract for pickup/delivery dates and claims protection.
• Find out if you can get a lower moving quote by moving between the months of October and April. Many companies nationwide offer better prices during those times. If you can't avoid a move between the busy months of June and September, take time to plan in advance and get your free moving quote and contract early.
